Free Insect Observation Worksheet for Kids | Homeschool Zoology & Nature Study

We’re currently working through Apologia Zoology in our homeschool, and one of our lessons asked the kids to observe a cold-blooded insect.

The activity in the book is pretty simple: find an insect, observe it, draw it, and write down what you learned.

I knew my kids would probably look at the insect, draw it, write a sentence, and call it done. So I made an extra observation page to help them slow down and actually look at what was in front of them.

The worksheet asks them to notice simple things:

• How many legs does it have?
• Does it have wings?
• Does it have antennae?
• What colors do you see?
• How does it move?

There’s a large space to draw the insect, plus room to write what they noticed and something they learned.

I made this for my own kids, who are in the upper elementary/middle school transition years. I think it works especially well for around ages 9–11, although there’s nothing that says you have to stay within that age range. A younger child could answer the questions orally while a parent writes, and an older child could add more detailed observations.

We’re using it alongside Apologia Zoology, but the worksheet itself isn’t tied to a particular curriculum. You could use it for a homeschool science lesson, nature study, insect unit, or just take it outside on a warm day and see what your kids can find.

One thing I like about this kind of activity is that I don’t have to add another curriculum or another big project to our school day. We’re already studying insects. This just gives the kids a place to pay attention to the insect in front of them and record what they actually see.

I made the worksheet black and white so it’s easy to print at home without using a bunch of ink.
